Historically, anything west the Ural Mountains in Russia is considered part of Europe. But it's mostly a cultural creation. There are religious and political reasons for making the boundary those particular mountains, and not somewhere else.

Geographers will tell you that Europe is physically attached to Asia (and therefore, is a technically a subcontinent).

most of the boder is created by the ural mountains and caspian sea. russia is in both asia and europe. but euopean russia stop at the ural mtns.
