The quote 'never work with children or animals' is sometimes attributed to WC Fields. However, there is some conjecture that he never said this.
Fields stage persona was of hating children. On of his quotes was 'Anyone who hates children and animals can't be all bad'.
However, he is reported to have actually been quite fond of Baby LeRoy, his antagonist in several movies.
I liked another quote attributed to Fields: 'I like children, especially girl children about 18 years old'.

W.C. Fields hated working with kids and animals in movies because they always upstaged him, You're close on the exact quote but I can't be sure.

It sounds like something W. C. Fields would have said...I do not think he liked being upstaged by either!

I couldn't find it but it sounds like W.C. Fields who also said "I like children. If they are properly cooked."
