Regular glass is not: borosilicate glass (sold under the trade name Pyrex) is. Regular glass has too low of a melting point to be a good form of cookware.

The big advantage of "glass" is the transparency: you can see your food cooking without having to remove the lid. It also tends to be somewhat cheaper, it's nonreactive so you can cook acidic things like tomatoes without worry, and it's microwave-safe.
