I'm wondering this because another Yahoo buddy of mine asked me to find out for her and she dared me to ask yahoo answers, so here it is!

i do it to provide ''wash down'' on the waste line from the toilet,and to tie the tub drain into a 3 inch waste line as close as possible to get the best drainage and venting.it usually works out well for the layout of most bathrooms which generally are 5 feet wide as this is the standard width of a tub/shower unit and it leaves a good spot for the toilet to one or the other side of the tub.

It's a practice that goes with the average bathroom size as dictated by floor plan. They didn't think we would grow so large, look at the room in the front of the old cars.

So if you have to pee in the shower you can jump right out and not get much water on the floor.
