I think the Commander would be a little more nimble. The new Durango has gained a lot of size and weight over the old body style. Are those two vehicles the only options? I think the Jeep Grand Cherokee would even be better than the Commander. It has the same engine options and its a little shorter. It is less top heavy so it would be able to make sudden manuvers more safely. It also has about the same ground clearance (only about a half inch difference) as the Commander, so it is just as capable off road.

It's really up to you I will say this the late 90's Durango's have a front suspention where the ball joint behind the front tires on one side or the other would come undone, which cause complete loss of steering. And jeeps have electrical problems. And consider this how many old Dodges do you see on the road today.

Have seen full array: Ford Explorer, Ford Expedition, Chevy and GMC Tahoes and Suburbans, Dodge Durangos, Jeep Cherokees, Jeep Grand Cherokees and even Jeep Commandos.
But the ones I really liked were: H1 Hummer, H2 Hummer!

Well the Commander is a Uni-body design so it would not be very rugged for the use you are describing.
