Starting as early as 1958, Earth-bound scientists have sent probes to study other planets. Fly-bys were first, with all of the Pioneer probes, as well as both Voyagers and most of the Mariner series. In 1966, Luna 9 became the first probe to soft-land on another body, specifically the Moon. In 1971, Mariner 9 became the first probe to orbit another planet. At this point, all the major planets as well as several comets and asteroids have been visited by spacecraft in some form.
