I asked the same question awhile back and this is the best answer!

No, Italy does not qualify and it has to go through the qualifications.

This is another "pearl" of the INCOMPETENT and BIASED person called Sepp Blatter. I have already express my disgust about this individual, his arrogance and his contorted vision of the game. Under his presidency, he has damaged the image of soccer like no one else have done before.
After the Korea-Japan 2002 World Cup, he decided that the World Cup winner has to go through qualification (Brasil won in 2002). In all the other World Cup edition, the winner was automatically qualified (16 editions): as explained before, he is very much biased against Brasil and Italy... and he does everithing is in his power to damage those two nations. Yet, Brasil won in 2002 and Italy in 2006. I guess he (and his pal Platini) is a big "rosicone" too.

They changed the rule initially because they wanted to give the berth to Australia (or the Oceania winners, which will be them anyway). They later changed this and divided the place as a 'half-spot' to be played out between Asia and North America. This pissed the Australians off. Australia then decided to join the Asian Football Confederation so that it has a better chance of qualifying, but still made it to 2006 on their own effort anyway after beating Uruguay. However, from the next World Cup onwards, Australia plays qualifying matches as part of Asia, not Oceania.

So I think now, they can reinstate the rule of the defending champs having an automatic spot.

that is unhappy isn't it. I stay in Australia and that i did not even comprehend Australia made it to the ultimate now to not teach received the cup. women human beings's cricket must be more effective perfect known. I genuinely agree such as your comments at this kind of the game. T20 cricket is in basic terms almost as good as the different type, it calls for various skills to different varieties yet their skills that are in basic terms as tricky as might want to be found in different varieties. It disgusts me to confirm followers or perhaps communities like England and Australia that say they don't care about T20. T20 cricket is by technique of no skill a walk contained in the park, i imagine that is particularly the polar opposite. you may want to be able to imagine right away less than pressure. As a bowler you want to be prepared to address batsmen that are continuously searching to hit and as a batsmen you want to snatch adequate runs till now the overs run out. i imagine it has factors that are more effective tricky than what might want to be found in different varieties. i do not study about you, yet in basic terms taking a scenario. Imagining the pressure to win a tournament, imagining that i don't have adequate runs on the board, imagining that we are 7 wickets down is sufficient to make me comprehend that i'd panicking accessible! that is an adrenaline rush of a recreation. I do believe that T20 wasn't presented contained in the right way. It became presented with money and leagues, and that i'm not particular that quite sends the right message out about what this type is all about. with a bit of luck in time the hot guy will settle in and make some new acquaintances, income the understand he advantages.

i would agree that the current World Cup champions deserve an automatic spot to the next World Cup coz without the defending champions, the tournament itself will not be as exciting as ever. i can't imagine how on earth did FIFA president, Joseph Sepp Blatter could made such decision on insisting the champions to go thru the qualifiers again? it is a shame if the defending champions failed to qualify for the next one!

I think they should. What's better than knocking off the defending champs? Imagine if Italy doesn't qualify for 2010! There'd be an uproar!

actuallly...i do not thing they deserve an automatic berth in the next world cup. i do not want to be biased about any country. Do you think its fair that one team gets to go to the WC without qaulifying? I mean what about the other teams who deserved the trophy but did not get it (germany...france...brazil....italy...ghana)....its the wc, the biggest stage in the world...no1 deserves to get there without qaulifying. Do olympic gold medalists automatically make it into the next olympics? NO. and i do not think the host countries should get an automatic spot either
