if you trust your HR department (and dont' think that they're just corporate shills), get them involved. You have *every* right to be put through a management program *and* get pregnant. And you can intend to go back and then change your mind, it's your perogative. Granted, to be a fair and honest person, you shouldn't lie about your intentions, but it's still your perogative to genuinely change your mind.

He shouldn't be mad at you. However, he can ask these types of questions. He can ask, but you don't have to tell him. If he does demote you and you did want to come back...that is illegal. But, really, you don't have to tell him whether you are coming back or not until the end. If you decide last minute, then go a head, do it! He cannot make you sign a contract to "come back." You have every right to quit and take care of your new little one. Good Luck to you and I hope things work out!

First of all, I think you need to look into your state's laws and how you're protected. In California, expectant mothers are given a certain amount of weeks for job protection. My company gives us 18. There is also disability and bonding. Make sure you know what your rights are.
When I found out I was pregnant, my bosses asked me the same thing and they knew it was planned because my boss knew I was ttc for a long time. They're understanding about it. He has the right to ask you everything he did except for if it was planned or not.

I just told my supervisor last wednesday when I found out from my blood test that I was pregnant. They have the right to ask you every question except if it was planned. My supervisor asked me that question and it made me mad. I'm a married woman, and whether I planned on having sex to have a baby, or to have fun etc. That's almost like them asking you what position you did it in!!!! That is none of nobodies business. Talk to HR and let them know how you feel.
And as far as adjusting work around family rather than family around work, I commend you for that. I'm 5 wks preg with my second, my daughter is only 7 mos. they are close, I know, but I'm kind of glad cause now, I'm quitting my job and won't feel like I've missed out on too much of her life.

You are entitled to FLMA Family Leave Medical Act of 1993.
You can take time off from work to have a child and raise a child. Tell them you are coming back and give them a date. You do not have to go back if you decide not to, but if you give them a date, they have to hold your job open for you (by law).

I am in HR and your employor DOES have a right to ask questions (well, not the one about your planning it) Because of FMLA laws your job is safe, although if you are gone too long and they need someone in your current position, they can put you in another position when you return (your pay can never be decreased)
good luck

He can legally ask you those questions, but you don't have to answer him. They can't fire you or anything for not answering the questions, or for being pregnant. Do what you think is right, if you are going to work insane hours you might want to reconsider your job if thats what you want.
Good Luck

He has the right to know what your plans are. If you are not planning on coming back they need to make arrangements to hire someone else, or send another employee through the management training.

Hell no, this was not right of him to ask all of these questions.....and what about the man that got you pregnant? Do you think he got grilled at work like that? You should go to HR....
Also, leave with all intentions of coming back.....even if that may not be what you are going to do...you have to think about what is best for you right now....at my last job, my husband (in the military) was possibly going to be sent to another country....I hinted to my boss (and supposed friend) that nothing is for sure...but it is a possibility that I may have to move....and sure enough.....that backstabber laid me off! (for other reasons)....but later I found out that she admitted to letting me go because I was going to leave anyway! You can't trust that your boss will have your best interest at hand....so I would just not say anything at all until you know for sure.

no it is not illegal for them to ask you these questions and if your not sure how you will feel about going back after having the baby i would just tell them that you are planning on coming back . if you change your mind then oh well. you are entitled to an opinion change.
