6.5x – 14.5 = 7.75x – 12 (orig)
subtract 6.5x both sides and add 12 to both sides
- 2.5 = 1.25x
divide both sides by 1.25
-2 = x
so
x = -2

6.5x - 14.5 = 7.75x - 12
add 14.5 to both sides (doing it to both sides keeps the equation equal and "gets rid of" the -14.5 on the left hand side)
6.5x = 7.75x -12 +14.5
6.5x = 7.75x +2.5
Now sutract 7.75x from both sides of the equation, so you get the xs on the opposite side from the numbers
6.5x - 7.75x = 2.5
-1.25x = 2.5
Now divide both sides by -1.25, to solve for x
x = 2.5/(-1.25)
x = -2
