The idea of Saddam being executed actually sits ok with my usual liberal idealism! Am I selling out on my principles or just getting old and more right wing! I wouldn't wanna see it or take part in it but I really don't have problem with others doing it.

Dilb, I'd say the same to an asker but I've campaigned against it in the past cos I don't believe in State authorised murder or that it is a deterrent but it just sounds so empty now!

You aren't selling out your principles because you don't have them in the first place. You cannot oppose the death penalty except for people you happen to think should be executed. That's called supporting the death penalty.

I don't think the sitting Iraqi Goverment can execute Saddam, even though he deserves it. It think there would be outright Civil War in the country between the Sh'ites, Shias and the Kurds and no means to stop it. We could end up with a crisis in the whole of the Middle East, not just Iraq.

Also if Saddam is guilty of crimes against humanity are George Bush and Tony Blair not equally as guilty?

Whats the difference? we are supposedly from "civilised countries".

How many innocent people have died since the so called hostilies have stopped? They got their men, but the army of occupation is still there.

No you're just buying into their propaganda.

Saddam is hanging for the execution of Shiites that were plotting to assassinate him. He is not hanging for gassing the Kurds in the 90's. That being said, any country on the planet, including the United States, would have done the same thing if there was a massive plot to assassinate their leader. Every country. So this is essentially a mockery of justice. He should hang for gassing the Kurds, but this is a mockery.

Also, when will the United States be tried by the World Court for gross violations of human rights and breaches of UN Charter and Geneva Convention that virtually every administration since 1945? The lack of universal accountability also makes such a ruling a mockery of justice.

Hi, I am not a great lover of the Death Penalty, I just pleased that we dont have it in England, However I can see cases that deserve the Death Penalty like "Child Killers" and "Saddam", Saddam did the crime, the whole world can see that, it's when we get it wrong and someone lose's they live's that's when it is wrong, if they are locked up, well we can let them out. I just think when the Death Sentence is given it should be correct and the person should have done the crime....not just hope so!!!

I think I agree with you.

He has been convicted of crimes against humanity, and deserves to die a painful death.
However does that mean that we should therefore kill him? What is motive. Punishment, revenge, deterrent against other tyrants gassing the marsh Arabs?

A courtroom death sentence is calculated and premeditated surely this is murder?

You're not getting too old, you may be right-wing, Saddam was a vile tyrant. Now he's a powerless old man about to be murdered.

Either way I shouldn't lose too much sleep over this one.

(I must clarify that I'm not necessarily against murder and revenge, but at least lets try to put the fun back into it - courtroom setting far too clinical)

I'm not for hanging, but for very different reasons than you having been in prison many times I know that a sustantial prison sentence of over 20 yrs is a wonderful method of torturing killers for many years.

The punishment effect is felt by the killers families especially if and when they visit, this also punishes the killer.

The only wrong thing is that killers SHOULD NEVER be allowed to communicate with any do gooder's on the outside, this is wrong

I would like to see Sadam locked up forever for a realistic USA style prison for ever amonst the common criminals that he is.

Well don't you think this has nothing to do with us? The people of Iraq hate the Americans for intervening in their lives. When they were in a dictatorship at least they had a future and some freedom ... unless they crossed Saddam. Now they are all fleeing and say they hate life. They are scared, they are broke and they have no future happiness in sight. Is that freedom??? Why does America think that everyone must live by its warped morals? It's time America took a long hard look at its own society before inflicting itself on other cultures. We can't start to understand Eastern culture if we keep looking at it from Western eyes. And I wonder how many people in America have committed suicide because they hate their lives.

I am also against the death penalty and that also applies to him. Who are we but human beings with failings and faults and we should not be allowed take another human beings life no matter what they have done. There are enough secure prisons to contain saddam Hussein for the rest of his miserable life, to hang him means we are stooping to his very low level!

I'm against the death penalty and Saddam is no exception. Having someone carry out an execution in your name is the same as if you did it yourself. You can't claim to be against it but approve if someone else does the dirty work. That's hypocritical.

When you are against the death penalty, do you not understand that it is only proposed for people who do nasty things like Saddam? It isn't any 'nice' people who might be getting executed!

Sorry, but you simply can't be against the death penalty, and then try and make 'exceptions'.
