best i can do in one word is "genius" or possibly "virtuoso"
mainstream connotations, however, assume that genius is like height, it's just something you're born with. a more refined audience will understand genius is more about hard work (and some luck) than it is about cleverness.
similarly, a virtuoso implies mastery, more as a result of hard work than naturally endowed talent.
i'd be inclined to try a two-word phrase such as "applied aptitude" or "dedicated brilliance" but am curious to see what others come up with.
