Don't know the whole story but they were four separate privately owned electrical goods firms in the West of Scotland mainly that joined to get better buying power and therefore offer cheaper prices. Stepek was founded by a Polish ex-serviceman called Jan Stepek. They advertised widely on STV and Grampian in the early 1980s. Have a search on the Herald or Scotsman websites, they might have more info.

All the electrical stores, including Thompsons, GHRS etc were bought up by Dixons and Currys, who are part of the chain which is now PC World.
