Because they're excited for no reason. I espeially hate that during New Years. Wow, a ball drops. So what! Anyball can drop! And I also wonder what makes New Years so special. Nobody else don't care when the moth changes though. But anyway, I agree with what you're saying though.

And why would people applaud?
Then again, if I'm walking and a car stops to let me cross the streets or something, I will often say "thank you" even though there's not a chance he'll hear me from inside the car.
I guess it's the same thing. Just reflex reactions...

Tradition I guess! If we stop doing it it will mean that we are not enjoying it. We usually do that to get our kids exited & therefore we are teching them a pattern. One day they will pass it to their kids. Sometimes the fireworks are so spectacular that its hard to control our verbal exclamation. Aren't you glad that fireworks are relatively rare & of short duration.

I think they say YAHHH!! to get their adrenaline ppumped up. THey probably feel like younger kids again and remember the good days. You should try it some time.
