....you even get schoolgirls wearing trousers, but I've never seen a schoolboy wearing a skirt......has it happened?

Heather M: You don't get TV shows for drag Kings for the very reason that it is so acceptable for women to act like men (and would be SO boring). Homosexuality is not accepted and never will be THANK GOD.

I don't think so. If it was acceptable, girls wouldn't be labeled as butch, they'd just be girls. Get it? People can't just look past that stuff because they are shallow and ignorant. What a shame, huh?

I disagree- girls aren't really accepted if they are butch. If they're tomboyish, then they have a little more leeway, but full-on butch girls (men's clothing worn smartly versus sexily, real short hair as in a buzzcut, etc., no makeup, and a butch attitude) are going to get chastised a lot.

However, it's true that girls do have more opportunities to slide toward the masculine end of things than guys do towards the feminine. It comes from the Women's Movement- our insistence that a woman is not necessarily pink and frills (that that is imposed on us), and that 'butcher' women aren't necessarily gay. However, males have never had that opportunity, and stereotypes go back to feminine equaling gay, so we continue our culture of hypermasculinity because of our homophobia.

It's getting better for boys (metrosexuality, 'embracing one's feminine side'), but it's still not great.

You're full of ____. It is NOT acceptable for women to be butch in today's society but it is extremely acceptable for men and boys to be feminine. I dare you to open any fashion or entertainment magazine, find one accepted and famous butch woman, NOT find any accepted and famous effeminate men, and still hold that erroneous and completely false belief you just typed there. It breaks down like this:

1. Straight men first
2. Gay men second
3. Straight women third, as long as they conform, strip and obey
4. Lesbians last, because we don't conform.

Where you get that idea butches are accepted by today's society, other than Mars or too much chronic, I have no idea whatsoever. Show me one television show celebrating drag kings instead of drag queens, then maybe I'll believe you. Gay and straight men rule EVERYTHING.

It's not necessarily socially acceptable for a girl to be butch. People don't really care exactly how nice you are, they just care about appearance. I'm guilty of walking down the street and thinking... why is that girl butch? Of course a guy can be feminine, but people will say what they want, and odds are someone will say that the guy is gay. I have a friend who's really nice, and he likes to watch Chick Flicks. He's always getting asked if he's gay.

I think society dictates how men and women "should" look. If men and women choose to not follow that then I'm sure there could be reprocussions for some. Personally, I don't care how someone dresses or looks. I'm of the old school in that it's not what's on the outside that counts but on the inside! Wish everyone else felt the same.

Yeah a guy can be feminine. People should have the right to be true to themselves without it harming them in any way. Unfortunately we aren't to that point yet and people stereotype all the time. Odds are you'd be considered gay for dressing feminine. Here's a conversation I get all the time:

"I'm a transsexual."
"So, you like men?"
"Nope, I like women."
"Then why are you switching sides?!?"

I don't think it's acceptable for girls to be like that, or for guys to be feminine. I think it is gross when I see a girl acting like a guy. OR a guy acting girlish.
Girls should be feminine, and guys should be manly.
I have much more respect for the guy who acts like a man, not a woman.

I never assume somebody is gay due to their appearance. I have seen many butch looking women who are happily married with children and are heterosexual as well as many feminine looking men who are also happily married and are heterosexual....so don't assume by somebodies looks that their gay...

Acceptable to who? You are allowed to be as butch of feminine as you want to be, regardless of gender.

Okay man, people are most likely going to think you're gay. You'll just have to be comfortable with who you are. When people see confidence they will give you respect.
