My boyfriend just informed me that the new WoW is coming out in january and that he won't be doing anything for a whole week besides that...which also means not even going to school because he has to get to level 70 right away. why!? And does he have a bit of a problem?

Does he need to get to 70 for personal pride, or for other reasons? His guild might need people to get to level 70 asap so they can do the end-game raiding instances that are only available at level 70. It should be fine, as long as he is only taking this one week off.

People with problems prioritizing their time are prone to become horribly addicted to WoW. I've had my own problems with simultaneously attending school and playing WoW. Learning moderation is the key, and is a life lesson everyone has to learn sooner or later.

I think that the expansion may initially cause some people to put extra time into the game so they can level up to 70, but from the sound of the new content it should be less time consuming. One of the most time consuming aspects of the game for players at level 60 right now is raiding. You must schedule at least 4-5 consecutive hours at least 2 nights of the week (depending on how hardcore your guild is) to work through new bosses & new content. The new instances are going to be 25-man or less. Fewer people to deal with = an easier time.

World of Warcraft is dangerously addicting, and it sounds like your boyfriend's hooked along with 6 million other people. The bottom line is that if he's willing to harm his life by ditching school and ignoring his girlfriend, then this problem won't be over after just one week. That expansion pack he's waiting for has hundreds upon hundreds of hours packed into it, and the company that's making it is promising one new expansion a year for many years to come. Combined with constant content updates, World of Warcraft is a gaming addiction with constant life-sinking fixes.

Even if his interest in this gaming fades, he will likely turn his obsession to something else. Make sure he's worth it and don't allow him to place you second in his life to a game, but also respect his interests and don't demand he completely stops playing. Maybe he was joking, or maybe it won't hit him that hard. Either way, keep an eye out for the traces of a WoW addict (nightly raiding, bragging about phat loot, playing long after you go to sleep, checking forums or talking about the game when not playing, etc.)!

No, I'm not a girl and yes, I've been addicted to World of Warcraft before. Clean for six months and loving it!

WoW taps into what makes alot of games succesful, that is the pursuit of character development. The publisher of the game, Blizzard, has somehow managed to discover how to make the most of that drive. They have done such a good job at this that it has become an actual addiction for many. That's the why, and yes, it is a problem. Possible solutions include but are not limited to, exhibition of your disapproval of his planned course of action, but another approch would be to play the game with him. If you dont already play, try it out. Become part of his life in WoW. He should NOT prioritize the game before school. Most people don't realize how important school is until it is far too late.

I'd say he needs to take a break from playing video games. Play on weekends only. I want to play World of Warcraft, but not during school. My mom would kill me if I skipped school. But seeing how the level cap was raised to 70, he must really want to be the lucky few who have the highest levels. He should be devoting that time to you. I mean you are his girlfriend. Its an expansion pack called Burning Crusade. I heard it came out already but there was a problem with the new race called the Blood elves. They looked very efeminate.
