If you're concerned about getting updates you need to turn on automatic update, its in your security centre - assuming your running xp with service pack2 of course.
To get to your security centre click start and go to the control panel and double click the security centre icon.

I have found that the free updates from the Internet are rubbish, the ones you pay every month they work a whole lot better...Norton Anti Virus still the best I reckon. Personally I think it's best to do a update everytime before you go on the internet.

AVG free anti virus updates automatically everytime you switch on, you can get it from www.grisoft.com. If you're using XP SP2 you can set it to auto update. If you want to do it automatically check every month or so.
