My BS program at UCLA is about to be disolved. Geology programs all over the country are loosing students dispite the skyrocketing job market. This is an increasingly dangerous problem. How can we get more people to become geologists?

My idea: more earth science in secondary education, especially high school! That's why I'm studying to be a science teacher!

1. open up more evening classes for those who need to get back to school and stuck working. Schools are starting to see the average age of students is going up. Instead people are forced to go to the web and spend more money for less quality. 2. Get the department of education to get involved in kicking out loser instructors. 3. Universities need to start getting more involved in technology transfers and innovations with company (That is what a lot of school should be calling the Market) 4. Universities need to continue showing more ethic building opportunities and the Universities need to show more loving and caring rather than profit. That includes cutting back on all those extra classes to take more money out of people pockets. Streamline in trouble times

I think teaching Geology 101, to a broad audience in the university. The class needs to be broad and mind blowing. There are so many cool things in earth sciences that need to be said.

From Mars geology and the search for life in outer space, to reviving bacteria trapped in fluid inclusions, the ocean drilling program, predicting volcanic eruptions, etc.
We have to tell students that Geology is so broad that you can become a pure scientist or a professional attending the needs of a community.
But we also have to tell them the practical side of being a geologist. People relate to practical applications and in being useful to a society. Rarely this is taught in Geology 101, so there is a disconnection with society. If Teachers and Professors connect geology with society, you will increase your chances of having the geologists that society needs.

Geology is a very cool subject, hard to believe people aren't majoring in it in large numbers these days. You are right about the the job market too. Students might wonder what they can do with a geology degree besides teach. They need to be made aware that geology can be a lucrative career (lots of geologists in the oil and mining industries) and great for someone with a sense of adventure (traveling to remote corners of the world).
Good luck with your career plans!

Make them have realistic dreams. I cant believe black families preach their kids to be major sports players and dont realize the reality of them failing. The only back up plans they have is to sue someone or live off welfare or worse become a rapper.
