The mintage for the 1905 Indian head cent is 80,719,163 so it is not very scarce. In circulated grades it is worth as low as $1.25 in good and up to $6.00 in extra fine, more if it grades higher. Some of the Indian Head or what are commonly called Buffalo nickels have some rare dates and of course the dates wore off easily. On these coins the grade is important, for there can be a great difference in price between say, grade good and extremely fine. The coins need to be graded before you can get a price and of course you need to check mint marks. The mint mark is on the buffalo side below the words five cents. If you have a lot of nickels, get a coin magazine with prices such as Coinage or Coin Wold Coin Values. They will give you an idea of price. If you sell you will get less from a dealer. As for grading a grading guide is best, bought from a coin dealer or maybe found at a library. This may help though. Grade good: legends and date readable horn of buffalo worn off.Grade Very Good: half horn shows.Grade fine: 3/4 horn shows and the obverse (Indian side) rim is in tact. Grade very fine: full horn shows & Indians cheekbone worn. Grade Extremely fine: full horn & slight wear on Indians hair ribbon. You can also seek help from a local coin club or a dealer near you.
