How do I keep raccoons (or maybe opossums) from getting into my trash cans at night? I even had plastic cans with locking lids, but they chewed right through the lids and continue to pull trash out night after night. Sometimes they knock over the cans and pull entire bags out, scattering it all over my backyard.

Anyone know how to stop them?

Get metal trash cans and add locks to the lids so they cannot open them. They will get discouraged and leave.

If you want to keep trying with the plastic ones go to a L&G Center and get repellent with garlic oil as the active ingredient. Usually this works but you have to keep reapplying after every rain or if the smell becomes too weak for you to smell. Good luck.

Well, the best thing that worked for us was the presence of our big (55 lbs., not huge) dog. He would run them off as soon as they began to approach.

Actually, our pomeranian mix trapped one up on the trellis. It'd been there all night, and we had to lock him up in the house so that the raccoon could get away.
