In the simplest sense, the "best of five" series can be won in only three ways: 3 games straight, 3 games out of 4, or 3 games out of 5.
Within those three ways, though, the order of wins and losses can vary considerably. For example, WWW (win, win, win) is the only way for the 3 games straight, but the 3 games out of 4 can be LWWW (lose, win, win, win) or WLWW or WWLW. The 3 games out of 5 can be WWLLW, WLWLW, LLWWW, WLLWW, LWLWW, or LWWLW.
