...so mama, you always told me
sin was a different crime

you may not go to prison...
...but you'll still be doing time

But tell me, mama, tell me
will you suffer for your deeds

or exist in perpetual luxury
being catered for all your needs

So mama - please forgive me
it's time to walk away

I thought - no suspected
that it really was pointless to pray

At the beginning. Okay, to be serious. When I write stories (for my own pleasure only, I am too embarrassed to let anyone read them) I make an outline of the characters, proposed plot and the setting. I don't necessarily go in order if I have a good idea but write it in steps and try to tie it together after that. I also write down unique features of the story so I can refer back to them and try to keep it all making sense.

I would begin like "It was a cool crisp fall day in _____. "So and so you get the point. I use decriptive word to start so it will sound more exciting when you do finally get where you are. I've written several stories(weather their really good or not I don't know. Only several people have read them) And I find that it dosen't really matter where you are as long as the reader get's the main point of view. Take that into consideration.

The are only good with ghost stories in planet of apes.

When they do write someone else get empty pockets while the ghost writers laugh all the way to the bank with a million dollars best sellers of ghost stories in cashing out the check in planet of apes.

I would begin in my imagination and let it flow. Such as:

"It should have been as clear as the nose on my face. It would have been if Charlie hadn't stepped on my glasses while running down the hill behind the store we had just robbed. As it was I didn't notice the blood drippping down my hair onto my shoulder, staining the shirt June bought for me only yesterday when life was open before me. Now I don't think I'll have a tommorrow, not by the sounds of the sirens screaming my way."

How's that?

It depends what the book is about. You could start by introducing the characters and perhaps a family tree if its a saga and a map of the area where the plot is situated which helps to get people involved in the story.

Depends on the type of story you are writing. I wrote a story to my son that started with "Sam woke with a start, realizing that he was once again late for school." something that gives a little information, and lets the reader tie in with the character, while wanting to know more

I'd start at the very beginning.......
Seriously though, there are no hard and fast rules.Write the last chapter first or vice versa, it's up to you. The finished product is the most important thing not the order in which is written.
Good luck!!

Take something you know lots about and mix it with something you don't but have always wanted to! Research, start writing and before you know you've written a story that intrigues your readers because it intrigued you to begin with!

I would begin on the day Britain decided to sent troops to Iraq and the consequences this has brought to different family members.

I find it easier to start at the end and then you know what direction your book is heading and therefore wont go off on a tangent. Try writing the last paragraph first.
