Dell's are a great value, they are rather pricier than the competition. HP is a good performer, it is quite solid, the lid hinge is a prblem because after 20 rotations, the screen becomes all wobbly. E machines, are complete bargain notebooks, the new N10 bundle avalible at Wal-Mart is a solid performer. It is a quite basic notebook, but i have one and it runs well, although the proprietary sempron processor is kind of lousy, i would replace it with a Core Xeon which is Intel. Emachines didn't really do well prior to the n10 especially the M2105 which my brother has, the battery runs down and wears out quickly, hinge is too. wobbly. You are better of with a Dell if you have enough money, they start at around $543, the toshibas start at $739 and the e machines n10 is the only E machines notebook available and it is a great value, consisting of LoJack Laptop Trace, a flash drive, a Targus notebook backpack for only $548.95 at Wal-Mart. It is nice

I say their order is Dell > Toshiba > HP > e machines (I never heard of it)...
Dell is best for its durability. It's a tough laptop that has both features and style. I hear they also have good customer support.
Toshiba is the same as dell in terms of durability and style however their customer support is not that good. I have a Toshiba for the third year now. It's perfect except for battery life (it was 2.5 hrs now 15 mins)
HP. It's the best if you look for excellent look and multimedia features. But I've had bad experiences with all HP laptops I've seen with my friends. Within one year, one had a loose screen, the other had a screwed up cd rom and the last had two not functioning keys in the keyboard.
e machines is just a name for me. I never saw or used one.
I hope this helps.

Personally, Dell is too loud when running, HP is good (with a very good speaker) , toshiba has very high scores in testing, emachine- never heard about it.
