The screen is slightly pixellated in places, esp where there are bright colours or lettering - can we do anything about this, such as changing th settings?

Its hard to tell from your description exactly what the problem is but I'm going to guess it's a problem with the resolution.

right click the desktop and choose properties

go to the settings tab

Make sure that the resolution scroll bar or drop down menu is at least 1024x768 or greater. (The numbers might be slightly different if you have a widescreen laptop, but generally higher is better).

Also on that same tab make sure your color settings are set to their highest setting. Usually 24 or 32bit.

Hit Ok, the screen may blank out for a second but it should come right back.

Hopefully this will fix it.

laptops are different from desktops in that the resolution is generally set at optimum out of the box because you usually don't have to adjust for a new monitor LCD v CRT so if your laptop is just out of the box, so to speak, take it back to the shop and let them sort out the settings. In my experience, with new things, it is better to have them working when you get them rather than fooling about afterwards always feeling resentful.

Unfortunately the problem is with the screen not the settings. It may have been damaged during some sort of shipping process...if it has a warranty I would try calling and see if they can replace it.

Are you running the laptop at its maximum resolution? if your run a tft at less than its maximum it can look really pants. Check your settings and see if it at maximum, if not run it up to full resolution, that should cure it.
