It's a string that has a metal weight on one end (a plumb bob). It is hung by the other end, and the weight pulls it down so it makes a vertical reference line. It's used in construction to see that walls and objects are vertical.

A plumb is a tool that used to measure straightness of a vertical surface that may have been used by such persons as th Egyptians. A plumb line is merely a straight vertical line.

Originally, a plumb line, plumb-line, or plumbline was a string with a lead (Latin plumbum) weight called a plumb-bob at one end, used to provide a vertical reference line.

Basically, it is to create a reference so you know what straight up and down are.

usually a piece of string with a plumb "bob" on the end of it that acts as a weight to hold the string straight. Used to obtain a straight vertical line in construction and surveys.

I'll try. It is a string with a weight shaped like a top on the end. It
is used by surveyors & woodworkers as a vertical line when there
is nothing to use for measuring.
