To solve, you gotta kill of either letter first. One way is to add your equations toegther, ESPECIALLY if one of the variables are opposites in each equation. In this one, the x's are opposites, so they are ready to die.

Add your equations together. You can do this as long as everything is lined up, INCLUDING the euqal signs.

Doing so will give 10y = -20. Solve this to get your y. Plug your y answer back into either equation (I recommend the bottom one), and get your x value.

The answer is y = -2, x = -22.
