At the time all the bidders were told it needed a new ignition switch. True, it did. That has since been fixed. The problem now is that although it starts, runs great (by the way this van is loaded with everything) it drives in reverse only!! My boyfriend says he doesnt believe its transmission problems although he put trans x in it with no results, he now plans on changing the transmission filter. He thinks this may do the trick. Well....before I go and spend $ on "just trying things out," I'd really like some opinions from those of you who have had the same or similar experience. What did you do or try....what was the problem? I really rather not find out that my $250.00 "deal"..... really is too good to be true. Thanks for your time.

Your primary band is out on the transmission. This was common on that van. I have known owners to go through as many as 5!!!! That wasn't a good vehicle. However get a warranty and all will be well. It was only the trans that was bad.

Uh...I'm just guessing here, but do your boyfriends lips move when he thinks by any chance? If the shifter is in the right position when it's going in reverse, and it feels like the lever is moving into the other positions OK, your transmission has gone to live with Jesus. You can get a rebuilt, but there's a good chance that will just get you going long enough to find the next problem. That is way to old a vehicle to start pouring money into when you don't know how many things are wrong with it.
But, a filter and gasket with a few quarts of fluid won't cost that much if you want to keep Bullwinkle happy. You can also try a flush if you want to spring for 16 or 17 quarts of fluid.

I used to have a mustang that would not drive forward without warming up for twenty minutes first. I had to have the transmission rebuilt.

I'm guessing that you'll have to have yours replaced or rebuilt. You might want to try a junk yard first - if you can find one intact, it might work right off the bat, and you won't have to do anything other than disconnect the current one and install the junk one - but, you may need to come up with the money to have the current one rebuilt!

No biggie, you only paid 250 for it anyway - what's another grand on a transmission (or less).

Good luck!

I sure sounds like the transmission is bad. If you can get one from a salvage yard and your husband can replace it then it won't hurt you too much. They are rather hard to change though.
