I'm just guessing because it's shape and location makes it easy to pierce the brain if it breaks or shatters.
Just a guess, I'm not a doctor or a murderer.

That part of the brain controls motor functions like your breathing and heart rate.

So, if that part gets damaged your body can't regulate how fast your heart should beat or how much air to take into your lungs.

Also your vision could be affected if that area gets damaged.

I would think that as it is at the base of the skull any serious damage would result in death as it is an area that is close to the spinal chord and protects a significant number of nerves.

Because that's your temple, and there is pretty much a direct route there to the brain.
