I've researched and found some similar coins which are called cob coins; but have not found any of which have the same front and back. This coin also has 31 dots/circles around the border. Differing from the cobs I have seen online, this coin is not irregular in shape. It has one proturberance along the edge as if it were filled in and has an irregular thickness. It appears to be of bronze composition. It does not have a date or any other mint markings or any markings of assayers. Is this coin a replica of a shipwreck or is this something real?

There are a lot of replica cobs out there. My books only go back to 1600. I have found some cobs from the 1640's like yours but they are very irregular as are most cobs, but there are a few close to round. I think the key is the bronze you say it is made of. Cobs were cut from silver bars then stuck using a hammer and anvil. No non precious metal ones were made in the New World at any of the mints. In Spain though they did mint copper coins but my book says they were dated, at least from 1600 up. If you can send me a scan of it I might be able to do more research on it. Let me know if you can do this and I will send you the Email address to send it. I only checked one catalog, it is easier if I have some thing to go by.
