It's human nature and the way that our brains work.
We subconciously are always trying to make order out of chaos- mostly because our brains cannot handle more than about 7 things at once.

I'd assume it's because we like to feel like we understand someone or something by associating them with a category we're already familiar with. If we didn't categorize people, lifestyles, concepts, etc, it would take a whole lot longer to even begin to understand anything or anybody new (and granted, lots of times our categorization ends up being unfair or incorrect, but ... hmm, well, I suppose at least it gives us a starting point, hopefully most folks -will- modify those categorizations as necessary).

As for why we put -stuff- into boxes ... well, heck, that's just because it's so deeply, ineffably -satisfying- to be organized ... glorious, glorious it is =)

to make carring things easier or for easy storage, but what does that have anything to do with categorizing people?

once you label and that label is accepted, the verbal dialogue veers closer to control.

SFor example, I label you as a Fan of Peanut Butter. (no inuendo, just metaphor)

Next I make sneering generalizations about "those deviant peanut butter fans." If I see that the Unibomber liked peanut butter, I slam you all as cohorts.

You spend so much time defending yourself, while I'm free to make even more outrageous statements, and you look defensive while I claim the "moral" highground.

I'm not sure you want to go around stuffing people into boxes. The authorities might look at that as kidnapping.

Do you know how hard it is to find something which is out of place? If you did, you wouldn't ask such a question.
