The key to baby signing is to always say the word you are signing. That way the baby hears it as well as sees it. The theory of baby sign is that they can move their little arms and sign before they can produce the actual words. So, if you do it correctly, it does not delay language.
Baby sign is not a "teaching" tool like teaching children to read. You do it to help your baby communicate with you which is supposed to lead to less frustration on the baby's part (because they can't yet talk to you in words).

from what I've studied in psychology it develops the part in the frontal lobe, called the whernikies area, which involves the understanding of sounds and symbols. The reason that signing with your child is possible is because the area that processes speach, called Broca's area, is not developed untill 2 or 3. So no it will not delay thinking at all, in fact it may help but I can't say 100% sure cuz i'm not a doctor, these are just my theories. Keep up the research.

I tried it and abandoned it just as quickly. I was enthusiastic - my baby wasn't.. so here is what I did instead..all the time I spent with her I talked to her, not over or around her.
I read books to her, pointed to things and named them, sang nursery rhymes, named shapes, colours you name it - all as part of our daily routine..morning to night..
I also named everything that she showed an interest in and rewarded her for all her attempts (babbling and the like) at speech, by repeating it, smiling, giving her attention etc
The upshot was that she learned to talk much quicker than any of the other children at her baby group. She turned 2 last Friday and now talks like a 3 or 4 year old..
Therefore if I have any more I personally am not going to bother with sign language..what is the point? It is a skill which long term will be of no or little use to her and less use than being linguistically astute..
If you press on be sure it is for your baby's need and not your own..

We taught my son signing right from the start. He's 9 months old knows about a dozen signs and says just as many words. In my experience with our own child and a pile of foster babies, signing speeds up vocalization. The only draw back is that occassionally a child who starts trying to speak early will focus on his mouth instead of his hands and nearly stop signing for a few weeks altogether because he wants to TALK. This can make the child and you both frustated for a little while because the baby could communicate his need quite well for months and then he suddenly refuses to use his hands to communicate but his mouth hasn't figured it out yet either.
If you want to teach your child, I definitely recommend ASL as a language. Also I've yet to meet a child who doesn't love "Baby Signing Time":a video series that teaches signing to children. Most importantly, whether teaching your child to talk or sign, spend lots of time communicating directly to your child. Sounds simple, but so many seem to leave that part out.
Good luck!

I taught my daughter about 15 different signs starting when she was about 9 months old. She is now 29 months old and she is extremely bright. Everyone thinks she is at least 3 due to how fluent she speaks. I would recommend teaching it to her. The only drawback is when she was with her grandparents who don't sign and they didn't know what she wanted. I am currently working on teaching my other daughter who is now 9 months old. I took a class and learned 100 easy signs. I think it's great!

My son is now 6 years previous. He could no longer communicate till the month he grew to become 4yrs. i did no longer even think of that he could be an autism and that i did no longer attempt him, yet he has each and all the autistic signs and indicators consistent with what I learn autism. At 2yrs to 3yrs, he performed on his very own with the comparable toys popular, lined his toys on the floor or on the fixtures lie down in the back of it and staring at it . by no potential did eye touch and did no longer answer his call. we are praying for him daily that became what shall we do at that factor. We finally have been given him signed up with Rehab midsection. via the time we've first speech appointment, my son has began making some sentences. He became in speech therapy in basic terms six month and he handed the speech attempt given to him, yet nonetheless in occupational therapy till at last now. He can talk properly like a common youngster. he's 6 now and he's in PreK . He began analyzing at 5yrs. My suggestion to you is once you spot the autistic signs and indicators on your new child, commence praying on your new child at an analogous time as finding for help with the aid of fact God is the writer, he can restoration regardless of went incorrect in human beings. it is my have self belief. and don't wait too long like I did in asking your youngster's wellness care professional approximately any sign you spot on your new child that's not regularly occurring In my case, i will grant God glory for casting off each and all the autistic signs and indicators in my son. there is no longer something God can do and God makes use of medical doctors to heal somebody or miracle. i do no longer understand how God took the autistic signs and indicators out from my son. God will do the comparable on your new child in basic terms have self belief. p

We did it with my daughter. She had an over 200 word vocabulary at 19 months. That's just one kid, though, but for her she talked plenty early.
