I think the title "American Psycho" described the mindset of certain people in today's modern culture. Alot of us (even myself) imagine or have imagined killing someone we didn't like. I think he was one of those people and it was all imagined in his head. His mind just got a little too preoccupied in the notion and couldn't distinguish whether it actually happened or not.

i don't think he killed those people.
the whole movie is about fantasy and its integration into ones real life. christian bale's character imagines himself as one way; a way that is totally different than the way his peers see him. he sees himself as unique whereas his peers see him as one of many. b/c he is 'unique' he is able to do and get away with things that others are not capable of...i.e. kill people. the last scene where bale 'confesses' he is really confessing his fantasies, not the reality of what happened.
i might be wrong. but the movie is based on a book so reading it might be the best way to find a real answer.

He imagined it all. Because if you listened to his confession, he also said he killed his secretary with a nail-gun, but he actually let her go. This is one of my favorite movies, I just wish the ending could have been a little more finished... you know?

He imagined it. But he was so demented that it was real for him, and for us - the viewers. It was like here is a man that appears to have everything perfectly together to the last detail, but in reality he is totally crazy and it's all hidden behind this perfect exterior.

i asked the exact same question last week! didn't get any satisfactory answers tho. but i love it when he's leaving the message for his lawer, and he goes "tonight i had to kill A LOT of people!" with this little grin on his face-funny. although i watched it with my mom and Brother. uncomfortable? i think yes.

i think the idea of it was to obviously keep you guessing i believe that he did make it up in his head. but when he spoke about the person he killed but he was actually in England at the time he must have heard it from somewhere otherwise he wouldnt have said it.

I think he killed those people. I think part of it was yuppies being too self centered to notice and some of them actually admiring him for getting away with it.

i always thought that he had killed them all but that everyone in the 80's was so self-involved that they simply were too unaware to see the carnage going on just outside of their lives.

I believe that he did do it but in his psychosis he has this misplacement N doubts himself in the fact that it was all real
