Is it like leaving a car for repair with all my important papers in the front seat? Are all the techs honest? Will the tech have access to my paypal, ebay, bank account passwords? social security number? personal photos? address?

Yes any tech worth his weight in silicon can remove your windows passwords with relative ease. If you want your sensitive data to be safe you have 2 real choices:
Burn everything you want to keep save to cd or dvd and delete it from your hard drive.
Use a file encryption program to encrypt sensitive files.
I personally use Blowfish Advanced CS for file encryption. It intergrates into the windows shell, so if you need to encrypt a file you just right-click and choose encrypt file. The tech would have to be pretty hard-core to crack a blowfish encryption algorythm.

Unfortunately, you don't. if you have really critical files or stuff you really want to keep private, I strongly urge you to back it up to glass or a USB device, then delete it from the hard disk. I wouldn't worry about programs and applications, since it's nearly impossible to "steal" an application that's already installed. Most shops can get all the software they need anyway. Frankly, unless they're checking out a hard disk, I'd ask them if I could remove it before bringing it in. I have heard stories about the employees of a well-known computer repair "agency" who routinely search for and copy any music or porn they find on a serviced computer.

Yes, he will have access to every password you have ever typed into that computer, including websites. I just kill the bastards after they are done. I have an old well in my back yard just for storing the bodies.

He will know everything if he wants to learn it by searching the computer.

But most repair men make enough money so they don't need to steal your info
