Some people write the lyrics first, then write the song to match the lyrics, and other people start with the song first. I guess it depends on whether you have a good idea for a melody or a good idea for a poem. Yes, song lyrics are poetry, although it's not always the traditional kind of poetry with rhyme and all that. And for the lyrics, you should write about something that you feel strongly about; for example, if you just ended a relationship, you might be feeling particularly lonely or depressed, and so you'd write about those feelings.

Honey! I'm a songwriter. The first step is to try & write from your experiences, from there is where the best songs come from. 2nd: some writers, write the words first & then the music or vice-versa. You must find the most comfortable way for you & then start writing. Email me if you have any further questions..

good luck!

With lyrics, I would taking a writing course on poetry. Also you might want to read some books on how to read notes. Most people write about things that mean something to their hearts. If it comes from the heart you will put more into it.

Think of the songs that you like...what are they about? 99% of the time they are about something that has happened in the writer's life...write about you life...but you must live life to write about it...
