The first question that comes to mind is WHY?

That will be the first question asked by your states Department of Motor Vehicle Registrations.

Go to them with the Vehicle Identification Number VIN and ask the to search their records for the current owner.

This will only work if the vehicle is still registered in your state.

Be prepared to pay a fee. Also be prepared to be told "No we don't do that"

You don't. Once the car is sold the information then becomes restricted to you. The only exceptions would be if you are law enforcement, a tow service with possession of the vehicle and a need to notify the owner you have it, or an insurance company with a claim against the vehicle.

You need the cars v.i.n. or the info about the new owner, If your dad has any of the old paperwork on the car try with the v.i.n. first. Use it to locate the car through the d.m.v.
