in the film "Jaws" we see the three main heroes of the film set out to kill the shark, one thing I noticed though, was at the end of the film, the shark leaps onto the boat the "Orca" and, though his weight, begins to sink it. yet how can a shark (that weighs consiedrably less than that boat) do that? The boat alone outweighs a 3 tonne shark, how is this possible?

let me point out, I have read and own a copy of the book, and I know that's what happens at the end of the book too, but I say again, how is this possible?

also, in the book, it doesn't mention the shark attacking the boat a number of times, as a matter of fact, it only circles the boat, and at the end of the book, jumps up and sinks the boat. Also, for an extra ten points, how does the shark die in the book? and who else (aside from Qunit) gets eaten by the shark?

i think you have to remember that the shark attacked the orca a number of times, and holed the orca so i can only assume that it had taken on so much water, that the sharks weight tipped the scales in it,s favour

Don't forget, before the shark leaps on to the boat, it also tears quit a bit of the boat off by pulling on the lines that are tied off. Also, the shark rammed the underside of the boat, which was old an rickety to begin with. The boat is already damaged and sinking before the shark leaps up. Also, it's a movie. We need to suspend disbelief just a little.

The weight of the shark does not sink the boat. It breaks through the back of the boat and comes up on deck (where it kills Quint). In doing this, it pushes the back of the boat below the water line. Because of this, the additional leaks in the boat from previous attacks and the engine being out causing the bilge pump to not work, the boat takes on enough water to cause it to sink.

Well, great white sharks are at least 20 ft in length and weigh upwards of 1500 lbs, so that's not totally out of the realm of possibility. Of course, the movie makes it more fantastic and superhuman. They are awesome creatures, but hair raising, none the less.

On the weight issue, being that heavy I think it could do considerable damage to a boat, no matter what.

Greetings!

Had you been paying attention you would have taken notice that the shark had already put a hole into the side of the boat which flooded the engine compartment and the lower cubby.
Thus the boat was already well filled with water and the displacement left was not enough to keep the boat afloat.

Good Luck

I never saw the WHOLE movie but I did see part of the ending. My memory is a bit fuzzy but by the time the shark gets on the boat isn't the boat pretty damn beat up? I coulda swore the whole back of the boat was busted up. I mean if the boat takes on water then it'll lose buoyancy.

You forget that during the course of the three of them tracking the shark, the shark basically destroys the boat so it's actually flooding and sinking during most of the end part of the movie.

The shark had already damaged part of the boat. So, the boat was disabled and taking on water, which would make it more vulnerable to being sunk by the shark.

1 - All that weight on one end of a boat could capsize it.
2 - Jaws was much bigger than a normal shark.
3 - It's only a movie!!

The Orca was severely damaged and already taking on water. The bottom section of the boat was already flooded when Mr. Jaws leaped on to the stern.
