I had the same problem. I couldn't drill into the stump so I put a potted plant ontop. I filled the potted plant with a simple ivy that does not die off during the winter. Eventually it became a beautiful ivy mound I surrounded with a small flower garden.

Just do both.
While you're using it to hold a pot or some decorative thing, begin the process of removal.
Go down to your local hardware store and purchase some stump remover from the garden section. (typically in the pesticide aisle). It's a granular formula that requires that you simply drill into the stump a few times and pour some of the mixture in. The process takes awhile for it to work, so you might as well start now, and then when it comes time that you want to remove the stump, your job will be a lot easier.

I would place potted plants on the top of the stump and dig a flower path around the stump and plant flowering ground cover around the tree stump. Surround the flowers with some kind of border, like railroad ties or brick. Basically, disquise the stump with more plants, or how about a bird bath on top and plants and flowers around the edges?

How tall is it? Where is it located within the yard? High wide is it? Lots of options you can do with it! 1. Put a flower bed around it and a pot on top of it and attach a carved street number sign to it 2. Have it carved into something(depending on its height) 3 Look at landscapes in your area and find an idea and run with it!

Plant flowers, bushes, vines etc. around it. The plants will grow around and on the tree stump, making look nice, and like the stump was intentionally left.

Spruce it up with some flowers or pretty ivy. Might make a cute picnic table for kids. Painting a neat design would be cool. Have fun and good luck with your stump.

Hollow it out a little and put a birdbath basin on top of it and plant some ivy around it. It will be the centerpiece of your yard and you may not want to remove it after doing so.

You could hollow it out to place a planter right in it, too, and then you can easily change the planters as often as you like, without worrying about just rotting out the interior of the stump.
