I think that the derivitave nature of music sort of makes it necessary to compare bands if you want to have any kind of meaningful understanding of what they are. I don't like to hear things like "Led Zeppelin is way better than Madonna", because they're not similar enough to compare fairly.

But think of a band like Oasis, they'll obviously be compared th The Beatles because they're clearly influenced by them. Comparing bands is a great way to introduce your friends to new music.

If I told you about a band called Cassavettes, and all I said was "They're awesome!" you wouldn't really know what to think. But if I told you that "They sound sort of like Ryan Adams" you might have a better idea as to whether or not you'd be interested.

You can certainly compare aspects of one band to those of another band, but direct comparison, unless the bands' music is so similar as to make the differences unimportant, is fairly meaningless. That being said, it's a music critic's job to do exactly that, to give the reader a point of comparison to bands the reader is already familiar with; also, radio programmers have to compare bands in order to figure out whether or not the bands fit together in the same playlist; likewise, music retailers must compare bands in order to determine where their CDs should be placed in the store; also, music promoters compare bands in order to figure out their marketing strategies (do we advertise this CD in "Tiger Beat" or in "Revolver"?). Oftentimes, bands will compare themselves to other bands, in order to reach an audience that might be interested in their work ("Well, our biggest influences are . . ."). Finally, we do it ourselves, telling our friends, "Well, if you like THAT band, you'll probably like THIS band - check it out!".

Yes! I like lots of different styles of music and get really annoyed when people start trying to put one over the other. I think they are all pretty much equal in talent and simply don't listen to the few I don't like.
