This is truly one of the most argued questions of all time because there are so many great guitarists. I don't generally jump into answering this one anymore, but I will say that I am fond of Clapton and people like B.B. King, along with so many others.

There are many, many, many great guitarists out there... Here's my take, although I'll be leaving out many great players that I've never heard of...

Hendrix, Van Halen, Vai, Page, Allman, Gilmour, Felder and Walsh (yes I'm Eagles fan...), Stevie Ray, Jeff Beck, Berry, Les Paul
Benson, gool ol' Wes Montgomery, Freddie Green, Larry Carlton, Ritenour, Charlie Christian, Pat Metheny
BB King, Clapton, Robert Johnson
Chet Atkins, Tommy Emmanuel (he tops my list right now I think)... I can't think of anymore at the moment...

Jimi Hendrix (rock) Chet Atkins (country) Andres Segovia (classical) Stanley Jordan (jazz) and an Aussie named Tommy Emmanuel (not sure how to categorize him) have to top my list.

Others to note: Chuck Berry, Carlos Santana, Russell Malone, Wes Montgomery, Ritchie Blackmore, BB King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmy Page, Les Paul, George Benson, Roy Buchanan, Kaki King. (I could go on; there have been a lot of great ones in a variety of genres.)

I've heard John Mayer play guitar, and he could be truly great, but he'll have to make a decision not to be a teen heartthrob and just be a musician. We'll see.
