I have to say it's the Bugattit Veyron. 1001 Horsepower, 0-60 in 2.5 seconds. The thing is hella amazing.

In second, would either be the McLaren F1 (its old tho) or the Salee S7 TT.

Your thoughts?

Let's stick to street legal cars with true factory omologation (project cars are something else and more complicated to list and compare):

1) Bugatti Veyron - 253 mph
2) Saleen S7 - 240-260 mph (according to versions)
3) Koenigsegg CCR - 242 mph
4) McLaren F1 - 231 mph
5) Ferrar FXX - 217 mph

Data from factory press releases.

However, you would have to consider the ratio between pure speed and downforce. With that in mind, the two most complete cars for handling in a track at the highest speed are the two F1 derived cars: The Ferrari FXX, and the McLaren F1.

The McLaren F1 is the current holder of the "fastest production car in the world" title, but only because other capable competitors, for some reason or other, haven't yet been subjected to a top speed test. Manufacturers have been chasing this title for years. There was once a time when the 352 hp Lamborghini Miura was the world's fastest production car, with its V12 engine powering it to 170 mph back in 1966. A current-generation 350 hp V8 Corvette can best this figure nowadays, at a cost of only about 40 grand. More recently, the Porsche 959 held that title back in 1987. Powered by a 450 hp twin turbo six cylinder engine, it reached a top speed of 197 mph. By 1992, Jaguar had entered the game and a 542 hp V6 turbo powered its XJ220 to an official 212 mph, becoming well-known as the fastest street-legal production car at the time. Then, only a year later, McLaren burst onto the scene and took the title without much effort, jetting away to speeds in excess of 220 mph.

More or less................. this is the idea..............

Well it's definitely not the viper or that car with 3 wheels( It's called the T-rex and it's already out, it's made out of a factory in Quebec,Canada. It's a motorcycle engine, built around a custom 3-wheeled car frame. It's available already, but the waiting list is quite extensive. Now the SSC Ultimate Aero TT has been proven to be faster then the Veyron, but there's a car that was unveiled by Barabus, The Barabus TKR is said to have a top speed of 270mph which is more than what they achieved with the SSC while trying to beat the Veyron, they achieved 257mph. Although i'm not sure if this car is on the market yet. This is the fastest PRODUCTION car. it's street legal and not a race car, there may be other cars that have been modified to be faster and there may be faster race cars.

The Veyron is the fastest 252, then The saleen S7 but I don't rember the speed off the top of my head, then the McLaren with 242, I don't know where people get 231 for the Mclaren, the BBC has a video in the cockpit of a McLaren F1 doing 242.

Don't forget the Spyker and the Koenigsegg ccx.

But ya the Veyron has the best 0-60 and top speed at 253mph. Course that is all straight line speed. Alot different than track speed.

The Veyron is truly the fastest production car in the world. There might be that Barabur thing, but the theoretical levels of grip for that acceleration can only be achieved with slick tires. And slick tires are not road-legal.

Second... Probably the Koenigsegg (CCR and CCX), and after that... no idea. But these two(Veyron and CCX) are my favorites.

I read at one time that the McLaren was the fastest car that was mass produced with a top speed of around 231. I'm sure there are cars that have been made that have gone faster though.
