What kind of brush and soap if you get down to hands and knees and scrub?

I just use good old vinegar and water. I'll use a scrubby sponge for any tough spots, but use a mop for the general cleaning. Works great on grease, dirt, anything. Also regular cleaning will minimize any actual scrubbing.
If I had to clean a really dirty floor, I'd use a bristle brush (wooden, plastic bristles) and some bleach/water. Warm water. Then wash again with the mop.

The most effective, cost-saving and eco friendly way of cleaning such a surface is to 1. Degrease-- either Bicarb made into a paste (cleans and disinfects) or hot water and concentrated dish detergent or cleaning vinegar; 2. Un-stain--: Using a micro fibre cloth, wipe over with a nappy wash or scrub with the non-scratching variety of pot scrubbers. A shaggy old toothbrush is particularly help for the deepest pitted spots. 3. Stain resistance-- apply polish or floor wax Hot water + Microbres mostly do the cleaning well enough, chemicals are used because they were already around and out of habit or as extra insurance for hygiene. Enjoy your houseproud floor. Cheers for the season. P>S> Suggests skip the ajax, it makes fine scratches which give even more surfaces for grime and bugs to linger. We had a house guest who used ajax and gumption everyday for months, the laminex was left dull and finely etched.

It's unlikely you have real linoleum (the stuff is made again, but its very pricey). Real linoleum takes any good floor cleaning liquid, and even ammonia, but needs to be waxed.

Most modern floors are vinyl, and any good cleaner rated for it works.

I just use pine sol. I pour a little on the floor and wet a paper towel, and wipe. I don't even own a mop. You can get in the corners better that way, and it just seems more efficient.
