After you give birth, you will bleed quite heavily. This is called the lochia (pronounce lo-key-a). It tends to get paler and less heavy after a few weeks, but can dribble on and off up until about six weeks, by which time the uterus has returned to pretty much it's pre-pregnancy size.

If you are breastfeeding, your periods may not return until you wean your baby, because the hormones released suppress ovulation - so much so that it is considered a form of contraception (lactional amenorrhea method) AS LONG as you are FULLY breastfeeding, have introduced no bottles or solids, AND your baby is under six months old.

If you are bottle feeding, you may ovulate within a few weeks of birth, and your periods will then resume. Don't forget you ovulate BEFORE you see your first postpartum period, and could get pregant if you have unprotected sex at this time. Some women are very fertile just after giving birth - I have known women pregnant again by the time they go to their 6 week postnatal check!! I have also known women who previously needed IVF or other fertility treatment suddenly conceive naturally after having a baby. So if you don't want another baby and you're not fully breastfeeding, use contraception right away.

Generally you bleed for about 2 weeks after the birth anyway and then it tapers off and your regular cycle should start to come back after that. everyone is different tho and remember its particularly easy to get pregnant in that first 6 weeks after giving birth!

Are you breastfeeding? If not, it can be anytime, but it was 6 weeks with both of my children. If you're breastfeeding, they can stay away for upto a year, or even until you've stopped breastfeeding. The first one is extremely heavy though, so be prepared for that!
