The nurses at the hospital and my pediatrician told me to bathe my son a couple of times per week.

Sponge bath until the umbilical cord falls off. Then usually every night before bed. Helps them to relax. Babies have a "newborn" smell that not all people like, and after a couple of days the smell is strong, so I would recommend bathing at least every other day. Plus they get a build up in the rolls of their thighs, under arms etc. and it can cause irritation.

Whenever they are dirty or about once a week.

Too frequent washing can cause dry skin and cradle cap.

On the other hand I would wipe his neck, hands and feet at each diaper change. Breastmilk/formula tends to accumulate around the neck. (I just used a wipe of a paper towel with water).

However if you enjoy bathing your baby every day feel free. Just remember that you do not have to always use soap. Use gentle soap and watch skin condition, rinse thoroughly. If you use moisturizer be weary of the ingredients as they will a) end up in the babies mouth and eyes and b) sit on the skin for a long time. (I used flax/olive oil and regular baby body wash -store brand).

Babies don't really get that dirty, though if you have a poopy mess go nuts. Oh and another thing that helps with poopy messes. You know the peri bottle they gave you at the hospital to clean yourself. Fill the peri bottle with warm water (and maybe a touch of soap). Warm the bottom of your bath tub with some warm water. Place the baby on its back in the tub and use the bottle to spray the poop off. Once he is clean wrap him in a towel. Turn the shower on for a few minutes to clean the bottom of the tub and you are done! (When he is old enough to hold his head up, around three months. You can use one of those mesh bath seats to prop him up on his belly for even better access to the disaster.)

My daughter is 3 1/2 months old and she gets a bath every other day. That's plenty, especially with the drier winter air. For the first month she only got baths maybe twice a week. As long as you wipe their bottoms with a wash cloth and also around their neck (especially if they spit up a lot) and hands, they really don't need baths but maybe once every two to three days.

I bathe mine about every day to every other day. She has really messy poops and a lot of hair that gets oily quickly, so it's sort of nessessary that I give her a bath that often. Plus...there's no better smell than a freshly bathed baby. I haven't had a problem with dry skin or cradle cap either. She gets lotion after every bath, so maybe that helps.

you wash a newborn up everyday but you only give them a bath twice a week. Their skin is to sensitive for all of the soaps and it is pr oven that it will dry your baby skin out

It can be daily for relaxation and establishing a bed time routine by eventually getting him or her to associate bath with pyjamas, milk and going to sleep..

It does need to be daily though and a top and tail for hygiene purposes will suffice..

Up to you - like everything now because you set the rules. Good luck - newborns are amazing but so so so challenging and tiring.

Many people say that you only need to bathe them a couple times a week, but I bathe mine every day. I love the smell of clean babies, and it also helps to form a routine and relax them in the evenings.

I gave my son a warm bath everynight. I think that was what helped him start sleeping through the night at 2-1/2 weeks.

Newborns have delicate skin and bathing everyday and irritate it. I bathed my babies one or twice a week unless we had one of those diaper explosions!
