Some psychological patients completely refuse the idea that they are ill, and refuse to take medicine unless they are forced to take it, which maskes the situation and remedy more difficult to deal with.

More importantly, does the doctor know he's ill?

if a patient has presented to a system their is generally a diagnosis. I've known people that could qualify with a diagnosis but have never been in the system. It depended on their ability to adapt or maladapt.

I've known people that are schizo-effective, OCD, schizoid, and depressive (for all intent and purpose) but have never been in the system. They've adapted to their condition in some fashion. Does it make them mentality ill? Check the DSMIV, diagnoses required a presence within the treatment industry. If they don't present, they "don't have an illness".. (albeit their symptoms show otherwise..)

That's exactly the problem that many psychologists must deal with. It's very common for patients with illnesses such as paranoia, dimentia, etc. to deny that there is anything wrong, simply because they really believe that they are seeing or understanding things correctly.

It depends on the level of insanity.
If it is a minor problem - such as OCD, then they will admit it. But in the case of more serious mental illnesses, the patient may not be able to realize that he/she has a problem.

I agree that most disturbed people don't think they're disturbed. I have seen and heard a few instances of this. They just keep getting worse. I don't know what the remedy is for them. Very sad.

Isn't admission the first step to recovery? If they don't admit that they are sick, they of coarse they won't know that they are.
