This question may sound a little silly, but I was just curious if the songs that you purchase on iTunes are legally only to be used on the iPod itself or if you can burn them onto a CD as well as download them on your iPod?

Yes, you are allowed to burn it to a CD. The basic rule of thumb when it comes to copying things is you shouldn't be in a position that the multiple copies could ever be used at the same time. For example, you can burn a copy and keep it in your car, another copy for the house, another copy for an office. Because theoretically, you wouldn't ever be playing the CDs at those locations at the same time it is ok. However, if someone else has access to the CD and would play the CD at the same time you might be playing another copy of it, it would then be illegal. You can find out all about copyright at: http://www.copyright.gov/

Also the iTunes Terms of Service says this:
You shall be entitled to export, burn (if applicable) or copy Products solely for personal, noncommercial use. You shall not be entitled to burn Video Products.
