Everynight I have to take Benedryl so I can go to sleep comfortably, but if I skip taking it, I start itching all over and this is only right before bed each night so I have to get up and take two capsules just to get to sleep and stop itching. Is this a problem I have made for myself or should I see a doctor about it?

I have this problem too - It's mostly dry skin for me. I find if I don't drink enough water during the day, I get EXCEPTIONALLY itchy at night. There are still some nights I HAVE to take benadryl to fall asleep. I definitly recommend St. Ives 24hour moisture lotion after a cool shower (hot water dries your skin out even more) and drinking as much water or eating as much fruit or veggies that are high in water that you can tolerate.

See your doctor though because it may be something other than just dry, ashy skin.

Simple dry skin can be very itchy. And it is the simplest thing to fix. If the following recommendations don't help, see the doc. Avoid all soap to the back and legs. Use a non soap cleanser as a shaving lubricant if needed. Like Cetaphil, Dove liquid cleanser, CeraVe cleanser Avoid hot water to the back and legs Stop all scrubbing, nylon puffs, loofah sponges and back brushes. These things help symptoms temporarily, but make things worse in the long run. Moisturize regularly with cream especially after the shower. Apply with a wooden spoon if you can't reach. The cream should go on within 3-5 min after patting dry from the shower. Don't rub dry. Creams such as Cetaphil, Cerve, Eucerin or even vaseline

Yes, this a problem for a physician. You may be alergic to the bedding material or the soap that it's being washed with or it's possible dust mites. My daughter is very sensitive to a lot of powdered soaps. Try washing your bedding in Dreft, or Ivory soap detergent. Also make sure you use hot water for your first cycle of washing to kill any mytes that maybe on your sheets or pillow cases. Dissenfect your mattress with some kind of spray. You just maybe allergic to the Enzymes that are in the detergent you're using. If that doesn't work see your physician.

Wow. Sorry I can't answer your question but I'm so glad you brought it up. I have this same problem and I'm interested to hear everyone's opinions. I kind of thought I was a little crazy and it was all in my mind somehow. I shower before bed. I don't use the same soap all the time. So I don't know that it's and allergy to anything. Sheets are clean. My skin is not really dry. I typically have fairly oily skin. But as soon as I lay down and get comfy. I itch. It drives me nuts.

Sounds like you may be having an allergic reaction. Have you changed your lotion brand your putting on before going to bed?, or your laundry detergent?, or your body wash? Try an allergen free laundry detergent, and stick with sensitive skin lotions and body washes...determine what "new" product did you just start using, and get rid of it. Look at everything!! soap, wash, fabric softeners, etc. and you should be itch free soon! Good Luck!

Does this occur only in the winter AFTER
you've showered. The water where I live
makes me itch in the winter....
