which direction does floats face in tank of a sending unit of a 72 vw on install?

If you are facing the front of the car, looking down at the top of the gas tank, place the sending unit in the hole. The male connector for the unit should be facing up ( not UP, but toward the dash) and I beleive a little bit to the right.

As long as the float is down in the tank and flotaing freely, and the hole line up properly, things should work just fine.

Toward the center of the tank.Left or right will not matter to the unit.
