The fascination with labeling us Americans. I happen to be a US citizen. Almost anyone from the western hemisphere is an american. The people who originated this idea were very much aware of how dangerous nationalism can be. (It's being demonstrated very effectively by the party in power right now), and was used extensively by countries that were at one time, enemies of the US. To be a citizen of the US was to forego nationalism and embrace a melting pot, a country where we didn't give a rat's behind if you were Irish, or Chinese, or African, or Belgian, because once you were a citizen of the US, that's what you were, in addition to whatever illustrious ancestry you brought with you. I am saddened beyond measure to see the invocation of nationalism in this, what used to be, (and what could be again) the greatest country on earth.

of all things, organized religion absolutely baffles me, especially of the christian variety. they've got some good ideas (love thy neighbor as you love thyself, ect), but very few of them actually apply these lessons to their lives. and at the same time, they have the audacity to force their religious views into laws for the whole country to abide by, from abortion to gay rights. and it really pisses me off when they deny scientific fact whenever it doesn't fit into their bible's mythologies. i just can't wrap my head around that.

It doesn't make sense to me how the government really gets on your case if you owe them money but they do nothing when they owe you the money. You, the taxpayer, have to tell them that they owe you money. And if you say nothing, they pay you nothing.
