I don't claim to know the definitive difference, but here is my opinion: equal opportunity employment is when people cannot be discriminated against because of things like race, religion, sexual orienation, etc. As long as they are qualified, then these things do not matter. Affirmative action is when diversity is mandatory, and it is purposefully sought after. As in, there must be a certain amount of minorities working at a specific place, and therefore people ARE hired based on some of these categories. That's just what I think, anyway!

Affirmative action means steps are taken to insure a certain percentage of minorities are employed at said workplace.

Steps that may include hiring a less qualified person for a in order to fulfill a certain quota (but this is not always the case).

Equal opportunity is simply an employer who does not base qulifications on Race, Religion, Sex, Age...etc.

EEO means that no matter who you are or what you look like or where you come from, you have the same percentage of opportunity or chance to get the job. Affirmative action means that the company is putting a quota or preferential treatment towards the different races, genders or classes.

affirmative action is an umbrella term for many things that make sure people couldn't use race or sex (gender or identity) and few other AGAINST someone when it comes to things like getting jobs or going to school.

EEO is a part of Affirmative Action because they make it so people can't discriminate others when they are qualified for a job.

Equal employment opportunity is being blind to the ethnic background of the people applying for the job and choosing the best qualified as the person you hire.

Affirmative action is hiring according to their ethnic background in order to achieve "social justice", instead of whoever is most qualified.

equal opportunity means they can't NOT hire you because of race, gender, etc
Affirmative actions means they HAVE to hire a certain amount of each race, gender, blah blah. Affirmative action in school means a college gives special attention to minorities, and have to fill quotas to represent each minority.

i think belly dancer hit the nail on the head. it's all that stuff about "not hiring u because of your gender or race." i think that's pretty dumb though (sorry) if someone will not hire u because of your race or gender. i mean, a job is based on your abilities to do certain activities and what not. not whether you're white or black, male or female. u should get jobs based on your criteria. sorry if that's off topic...
