Because the government makes a lot of money from them. Alchohol actually has some health benefits in moderation. Tobacco is just a big money maker

The US government tried making alcohol illegal. They helped create organized crime. That would be the 18th Amendment. The 21st Amendment did away with prohibition. Cigarettes effects some times takes several years to show. Heroin can kill in minutes.

Because the tobacco and alcohol lobbies are very powerful. I think marijuana should be legalized, regulated, and taxed like mad. If alcohol and tobacco are legal, why not pot?
A little off-topic, sorry, but it really pisses me off that alcohol laws are totally ignored. I live in Alaska, and anyone who works in an establishment that serves alcohol had to take an "alcohol management" class. They tell you that the establishment can be sued for over-serving customers, yet I can't recall that EVER being enforced here.
Plus, I know a guy with 3 DUIs - the 3rd is a felony in Alaska - and he STILL just gets a slap on the wrist. In fact, he is currently in jail for probation violation and filing a false report. The idiot was driving (which, of course, he wasn't supposed to be) and totaled his car, ran from the scene of the accident and THEN called his car in as stolen. He has been in jail for about 6 weeks and is supposed to be out in about 2 more. WTF?!?!?

You cant outlaw everything that might harm you. Then we have to outlaw all unheathy foods, any kind of contact sport, etc. A lot of things are OK in moderation. It is our right as a human being to indulge in guilty pleasures when we want. Who would want the government to rule every aspect of our lives so we keep "safe" by their standards?

It's all about the money!! Tobacco and alcohol were illegal when they first erupted in our society, . Our state and government allowed them to be legal so that they could control the sales to make tax money. They do not get tax revenue from marijuana so they got it fixed to where they make their money from busting people who use it.

McDonald's and Burger King are bad for us too but they are still in business. M&M's are bad for us. Should we ban those too?
We can't take everything away that is bad for us. That's irrational, you can take anything and make bad with it. You should take everything in moderation.
Also, just so you know, I am not an advocate of smoking or drinking. I am 29 years old and I have done neither. I just feel that it's impossible to take away everything that is bad for you.
