I constantly bite my nails and cuticles until they are stubby and bleeding and they hurt! Any suggestions on how to stop? Don't say that nasty tasting polish, that is just gross and don't say chew gum because I am as I type and still chewing my nails. I'm too old to have this bad habit!

I was a nail biter for 40 years. Friends and family tried to help. The liquid stuff I would eat right through and get on with my nail biting. Finally, one day I decided I must quit - that I would quit. That was 12 years ago and today my fingernails are trimmed with a nail trimmer and they look great. YOU have to decide that YOU are going to quit. As you have already admitted, you are too old to have this bad habit.
The answer you're looking for is: JUST STOP!

Have you tried fake nails? Maybe having them on would give your nails a chance to grow a little?

Get some accountability... like a friend to call you randomly through the day to ask if you're biting.

Put a certain amount of money in a jar every time you do it and give it away.

Or make a deal with someone else - even if they have to give up a habit, too - and if you follow through in, say a week or a month, they have to take you out or do something special.

I don't remember how I stopped, I just did...but it wasn't until mid-highschool. And I was so excited when I could grow them out! They looked great. I still catch myself every once in a while, but attractive, healthy nails are worth not biting!

That's the pointe of that polish...to taste nasty. I used to bite my nails to and I finally started getting my nails done. Fake nails. (Harder to chew on) Everyone told me to get a manicure then you'll take care of them. Once I started spending a little money on them and saw how nice they looked. I stopped. You can get them done or do them yourself. I still have a tendency but nothing like I did before. Also maybe you could try getting on line or find some books that show you all the horrible things that are under your nails. I remember a guy when I was in high school who told me that. He said my mom's a nurse and do you know what you have under nails. It didn't stop me then but if you think about it you'll be disgusted by what's under there.

I am way too squeamish to do that to myself, and once I read that you are actually a cannibal and are eating yourself!! I would think though that you replace it with another habit, they say new habits take about 3 weeks, so just STOP and deliberately do something else... buy some nice nail polish and imagine how you will look NEXT month. Good luck!:)

hilarious! I am a 37 year old buisness man who still chews his nails!! I have tried everything, nothing works.

That nail polish stuff is a joke, you get used to the taste.

The most effective tool though was seeing pictures or video of myself chewing my nails, ouch!!! I look pretty stupid

If they had one of those clinics like how to stop smoking, I would take off time of work and go to one of those things.

Good luck and if you find something that works, let me know

i had the same habit till i was in my 30's and it just went away. i never had the cuticle biting and never to a point of bleeding. sometimes a new stress/problems doesn't help either.
